Beekeeping: the project exceeds 50 hives!

An update on the progress of the project a year and a half after starting the project.

The project in figures

On July 2, 2019:

  • 29 beekeepers involved
  • 4 pioneers beekeepers Project became referents
  • 51 hives installed
  • 38kg of honey collection

Transfer of a traditional hive in a modern beehive

October - Installation of the first beehives

Following training Manakara 4 pioneers beekeepersA mission was conducted to monitor the transmission of knowledge and to set up the first hives.

  • AT BerorohaA beekeepers association Apiculturists Association Mampiroboronono Sports and Zavankatowas created on the initiative of training back in beekeepers. The project was announced on local radio. Land are visited for the installation of hives, including a school apiary. The transferring from traditional hives are assessed, planned or made. Local manufacture of hives is launched, with ten ruchettes built at the end of the mission. Several traditional hives and wild swarms decanted to Beroroha and villages of the area (Beroroha East, Betamenaky, Soatanana) where many beekeepers are interested. Twenty hives are in operation at the end of the mission.
  • AT Tsivoko and in the Forest Menapanda, Beehives were built during the summer by ecovolunteers. More hives are built, and swarm capture ruchettes are placed in the forest. awareness and demonstration activities are conducted as villagers, although that interested by the project need to be more confident before launching.

November - Monitoring Mission

A month later, the team returned to the field to keep track of hives activities (24 ruchettes and hive body) and plan the next decanting.

  • Beehives are distributed to all members of beekeepers BerorohaAnd rules are provided for all beekeepers participating in the apiary school. Trainings are conducted every day, and a 20min film mounted following the formation in Manakara, is projected.
  • À Tsivory et dans la Foret de Menapanda, New ruchettes are manufactured and placed in the forest. The decanting of hives and the training continues.
  • New hives could be installed during a future mission side Kalambory, A village between Beronono and Tsivoko, near the Makay where a family would own 5 to 20 traditional hives.

It was during this mission that the presence of varroa est identifiée pour la première fois sur plusieurs sites autour de Beroroha.

December - Treatment of Varroa

January 2019 - New training for Zo

February - New monitoring mission

Two months after treatment varroa, a check was carried beehives and decreased recorded varroa. The rest of the mission was devoted to meetings with beekeepers in the construction of new hives and prosecution catch new swarms.

  • AT Tsivoko a big meeting brought together more than 29 beekeepers. Each 'have' swarms in the forest (wild swarms sometimes the 'property' of the person who discovered them) and wish to join the project. Training has débutées early March and a few swarms have been captured and placed in small hives.
  • In the Forest MenapandaSwarms were collected within 4 ruchettes installed and are transferred into hives.

Generally, beekeepers need more training before being autonomous. The demand from local communities is increasingly important sign that the project sets up well and is well received by local communities.

A first honeydew raised 24 liters of honey during the month of June. We'll talk in the next article!

It is always possible to support the development of beekeeping in the communities along the Makay! 👇👇👇
